For many wild animals, the annual mowing work poses a deadly danger. Fawns are particularly affected as they instinctively remain motionless in the tall grass and are therefore often not spotted in time by the mowers.
Without an instinct to flee, they are defenceless against this threat. Rehkitzrettung Am Großen Stein e.V., a non-profit association from Seifhennersdorf in Upper Lusatia, has set itself the task of giving these young animals a chance of survival - with the help of state-of-the-art drone technology and dedicated volunteers.
Their mission: Saving animal lives with state-of-the-art technology
Since 2021, the 78 members of the association have been working to save fawns from certain death. They use thermal imaging drones to search the fields in the early hours of the morning before the farmers start mowing. A pilot controls the drone while helpers carefully retrieve the fawns and protect them in boxes. After mowing, the young animals are released in a safe place so that their mothers can find them. In 2024 alone, 239 fawns were rescued in this way.
Why is fawn rescue so important?
In addition to animal welfare, the work of the association is also of great importance for agriculture. Thanks to fawn rescue, farmers can mow their fields more quietly without having to worry about injuring a fawn.
Our support for the fawn rescuers in Upper Lusatia
The proWIN pro nature Foundation is delighted to be able to support this valuable project with €500. Our funding will enable the association to purchase more drones and thus secure even more fields in the region. Currently, only around 20% of the fields in the region can be scanned. The aim is to increase this proportion to 80%.
A big thank you
