The amount of packaging waste has risen steadily in recent years. The problem with packaging is that it is usually disposed of after a very short period of use. This results in several million tons of plastic waste worldwide, which is also increasingly found on beaches. The so-called "unpackaged stores" have already proven to be economically viable in larger cities. These are stores where food and products are sold loose and filled into their own or provided reusable containers. In this way, the consumption of packaging waste can be reduced. The product range includes, for example, rice or oatmeal as well as hygiene products such as detergents or toothpaste pastilles.
The proWIN pro nature foundation supported the opening of the unpackaged store in Homburg "Unverpackt mit Herz" with a grant in 2021. It is now very successful.
But the proWIN pro nature Foundation has also supported a great project outside Saarland - the mobile unpackaged store in East Frisia. As unpackaged stores are only occasionally found in rural areas, the mobile unpackaged store can also reach and supply remote regions and smaller communities. In the long term, the trolley should not only be economically viable, but also generate income, which will then flow into environmental education projects. The environmental education program aims to raise awareness among the population, especially children and young people, for a more sustainable lifestyle and the associated change in habitual behaviour (e.g. avoiding packaging waste and protecting resources).
