Saving the native crayfish in Saarland.
The European crayfish, also known as the noble crayfish, is the largest native crayfish species. In the past, this crayfish species colonized almost all of Europe, but these populations have now plummeted and are extinct in some areas. Due to this serious threat, the Saar Fishing Association bought a remote pond in northern Saarland in 2004 in order to breed crayfish there and create a certain reservoir of these animals by stocking remote still waters. In the current situation, this targeted management and distribution of the noble crayfish is the only practicable way to save this species from extinction.
