Day of the forest
Since the 1970s, this day has reminded us how valuable our forests are - as the green lungs of the earth, a habitat for countless animal and plant species and an important climate protector.
But our forests are under pressure: climate change, storms, pests and fires are putting them under severe pressure.
This way you can help to protect the forests:
Take part in tree planting campaigns.
Get actively involved and plant trees to do something good for the forest and the climate. Many forestry offices and companies offer such campaigns.
Avoid and report littering in the forest.
Illegal waste dumping causes considerable damage to the forest. If you see someone doing this, speak to them or, if possible, write down their license plate number.
Pick up litter yourself.
Take part in forest clean-up campaigns or pick up litter on your next walk.

Do not dispose of garden waste in the forest.
Even if it seems natural to dispose of garden waste in the forest, this is prohibited. It may contain seeds of non-native plants that displace native species.
Do not smoke in the forest.
Around 40 percent of forest fires are caused by careless human behavior. Therefore, refrain from smoking in the forest to prevent fires.
Use recycled paper.
Germany consumes a lot of paper. By using recycled paper, you can help to protect forests.
Get children excited about the forest.
Take your children into the forest and show them this special ecosystem. What children know and appreciate, they will want to protect later on.
